Our Mission
Richmond Power and Light is a well-managed community owned and operated,
environmentally responsible, safety conscious utility providing
reliable low cost energy services. Through financial stability
and innovation, Richmond Power and Light will strive to continually
meet the needs of our customers and employees. We are proud
of our long and continuous service to the community; therefore
each customer and employee can expect Integrity, Respect,
Trust, Honesty and Excellence.
Our Background
Electric service was first provided to the City of Richmond
and a few other customers in 1884. The service was not adequate
for the needs, nor was it very dependable. In 1900 the citizens
of Richmond voted to form a competing municipally owned electric
utility in order to have adequate, low cost, dependable electric
service. Both utilities provided electric service until 1914.
At that time the City bought out the privately owned company
for $212,891 and became the sole supplier of electricity to
the citizens of Richmond.
From the original $144,000 investment made in 1900, Richmond
Power and Light has become the largest municipally owned electric
utility in Indiana. We have a very modern and dependable transmission
and distribution system.
We also have a very modern, efficient 93 MW coal fired generating
plant which is involved in a world class experimental Sulfur
Dioxide (SO2) removal project. RP&L is one of the most progressive
and innovative electric utilities in the United States. Richmond
Power and Light is extremely active in trying to help attract
new businesses and also help existing industry locate and
expand, here in Richmond. According to a survey published
by the Indiana Regulatory Commission, RP&L's electric rates
are among the lowest in the state.

Our Goal
Richmond Power & Light employees are dedicated to serving our customers.
This means having repair crews on call 24-hours a day, 7-days
a week in case you have an emergency. This means having a
well-trained customer service staff that can help you and
get you the answers you need quickly. This means working with
you when you have a problem with your bill.
It has been and always will be Richmond Power & Light's policy to
provide adequate, dependable, low cost power to all customers.
RP&L will always play a constructive, helpful, positive role
for the benefit of Richmond. Our motto is "Building Richmond
