What it Means
Richmond Power & Light serves customers who are on various types
of medical equipment that must have a constant source of electricity
to operate. The purpose is to help the customer in the event
of a scheduled or unscheduled power outage. In the event of
a power outage, RP&L will put these customers on priority
for the restoration of electrical service.
RP&L will try to notify the customer in the event of an anticipated
and prolonged power outage which may adversely affect the
supply of power to these medical devices. However, RP&L
can not and will not be held responsible for any power interruptions.
Richmond Power & Light will do its utmost to provide the
customer with a constant power supply.
Richmond Power & Light suggests that the customer obtain adequate
internal devices which will provide emergency power in the
event of a power outage.
Who Needs It
The customer's doctor must notify RP&L in a written document stating
the patient's name, address, phone number, type of medical
equipment, along with the name of the equipment provider.
The doctor's name, address, and phone number should also be
included. The following types of equipment are frequently
used by our customers:
- Liquid oxygen does NOT require electricity to operate. It is
a self-contained unit and is not considered electrical
life support.
- Concentrators and ventilators require electricity to operate and come
with a battery back-up. Both are considered electrical
life support.
- Apnea
or breathing monitors require electricity to operate and
come with a battery back-up. They are considered life
support.
- Heart monitors, aerosol machines for asthma, and oxygen machines
are all run by electricity and should be considered life
support.
- A lifeline voice communicator unit should be considered
life support.
Customers that reside in facilities such as a nursing home are automatically
on life support and do not need to be added to the list.
