1884
Electric service was first provided to the City of Richmond
and a few other customers in 1884. The service was not adequate
for the needs, nor was it very dependable.
1900
In 1900 the citizens of Richmond voted to form a competing municipally
owned electric utility in order to have adequate, low cost,
dependable electric service. Both utilities provided electric
service until 1914.
1914
At that time the City bought out the privately owned company
for $212,891 and became the sole supplier of electricity to
the citizens of Richmond. From the original investment made
in 1900, Richmond Power and Light has become the largest community
owned electric utility in Indiana. We have a very modern and
dependable transmission and distribution system. We also have
a very modern, efficient 97 MW coal fired generating plant.
Our Whitewater Valley Station has been the site of several technological
innovations. It has been recognized nationally and internationally
for its progressiveness. RP&L is one of the most imaginative
and innovative electric utilities in the United States.
Continuing Today
Richmond Power and Light is a well-managed, community owned
and operated, environmentally responsible, safety conscious
utility providing reliable low cost energy services. We are
proud of the vital infrastructure we provide and our long and
continuous service to the community. The Board of Directors
is the governing body for Richmond Power and Light. The Board
is an assembly of the Richmond Common Council who presides over
our weekly meetings. This is another example of the long-standing
tie to the community for which we serve. Richmond Power and
Light is extremely active in trying to help attract new businesses
and also help existing industry locate and expand, here in Richmond.
According to a survey published by the Indiana Regulatory Commission,
RP&L's electric rates are among the lowest in the state. We
will continue to try and work economically for the community
of Richmond and provide them with the best possible customer
service.
