Education

Richmond Power & Light understands the importance of active involvement in the community and the fact that we are community owned and operated. Nothing is more important than the education of students in the community of Richmond. RP&L participates in a large variety of community educational programs. We encourage organizations to tour the facilities and encourage employees to involve themselves in education activities.

Our employees are involved with community outreach programs; in fact many have a significant impact on youth education. For the past 16 years we have partnered with the Starr Elementary School in a program called Partners in Education. We have been active in a year-long program with the fifth grade of each school year. Part of the curriculum is to impress upon the student's professional business skills electrical safety, possible occupations in the electrical industry, generation of electricity and the role of state-of-the-are technology in their everyday lives. In cooperation with the Richmond Community School's program, Study Buddy/Mentor Volunteers, we have worked in conjunction with RCS Find Materials Center where as many as 13 employees donate their time to students at various schools in the district. The Study Buddy program helps students extend study time for a particular activity advised by the teacher. The mentoring program essentially advocates a big brother/big sister relationship with a student involving school issues or just general life discussions.

Each year, our facilities become the learning ground for many community organizations. School to Work is a national program designed to combine academics with real workplace experiences. This program shows a direct correlation between sound learning skills and future opportunities. Students work alongside an employee and experience first hand employment responsibilities and duties.

RP&L has the ability to bring sophisticated technology to the community of Richmond. We have prepared a vital fiberoptics technology for the local public and private schools on its system. All schools, from elementary to universities of higher education have benefited from the use of this fiberoptic system.

RP&L is often asked to play a roll in the development of education planning in the form of focus group participation. Specific examples are the Whitewater Regional Economic Council's Educational Needs Assessment Focus Group, the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce CEO Roundtable's Business and Education Liaison Program and The Wayne County Welfare to Work Initiative. In all cases RP&L is asked to step forward and participate in the advancement of goals and measurable educational objectives for the Richmond community. Some employees are board members and committee members to area organizations that address social issues like The United Way and economic issues such as the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County.

The foundation for any successful program is the commitment from a company's employee's. RP&L is proud of this positive involvement throughout the community and can anticipate more of the same from their employees. RP&L 's employees have that commitment to the community and as an organization they are encouraged to continue giving time to such activities in the Richmond community.

Other organizations benefit from our involvement in the Richmond-Wayne County area. RP&L participates in the following: March of Dimes Walk America, Wayne County Cancer Society Relay for Life, Christmas Parade, Christmas Adopt a Family, and United Way of Whitewater Valley.

Many of the employees personally involve themselves in other charitable activities and organizations in the Richmond-Wayne County Community. Some of them are: coaching athletics in the Richmond Community Schools; coaching youth athletics for the Evening Optimists Club; leadership in the Richmond Area Tennis Society; Wayne County Community Tennis Association; teaching are and athletics for the Boys Club; volunteering for the Green Acres Special Olympics; Community Food Kitchens; church functions in almost every denomination; South-Side Neighborhood Association; 4-H; Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
